Holistic approach of Quran to human development emphasized at al-Azhar conference

The Holy Quran provides a comprehensive framework for addressing human growth and development, focusing on the balanced cultivation of the soul, mind, body, and spirit, an Al-Azhar official stated.

AhlulBayt News Agency: The Holy Quran provides a comprehensive framework for addressing human growth and development, focusing on the balanced cultivation of the soul, mind, body, and spirit, an Al-Azhar official stated.

Mahmoud Sidiq, deputy dean of Al-Azhar’s faculty of studies and research, expressed these thoughts at an international conference on human development and contemporary challenges.

The conference, held on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at Al-Azhar’s faculty of theology and law in Cairo, brought together academics to discuss the role of Islamic teachings in addressing global challenges.

Sidiq noted that since the time of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), Islam has provided a balanced and civilized approach to human development, aimed at fostering excellence both in this world and the hereafter.

He emphasized that the Quran and Sunnah focus on cultivating all aspects of human life in harmony, ensuring success in worldly affairs and spiritual fulfillment.

Citing verse 77 of Surah Al-Qasas, Sidiq quoted: “Seek the gains of the life to come through your wealth without ignoring your share of this life. Do favors to others just as God has done favors to you. Do not commit evil in the land for God does not love the evil-doers.”

He also referred to Ja’far ibn Abi Talib’s stance with Najashi, the king of Abyssinia, as a representation of Islamic human values that contributed to centuries-long civilization marked by knowledge, ethics, and justice.

Sidiq explained that Islamic civilization embraces holistic development of the soul, mind, body, and spirit while encouraging good deeds and prohibiting corruption.

Prophetic Hadiths calling for comprehensive human cultivation and education were also referenced. Sidiq emphasized that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) exemplified this structure by endorsing actions beneficial to humanity and opposing those harmful to human life.

In conclusion, Sidiq stressed that returning to Islamic values and teachings is imperative in facing challenges currently threatening the Islamic Ummah and the Arab world.
